Happy Habits: Managing Your Money

We are continuing the conversation about Happy Habits we talked about on this post. What ways do you establish money systems to make life easier? With the end of the year in-sight and the holidays just around the corner, money can get tight, and talking about it with your partner even trickier, but it is worth it and will help your peace of mind. Here are a few things that have helped immensely and if you plan it out just a little, treat yo’ self!

Happy Habits: Managing Your Money | Oh Happy Day

1 – Have a budget and track your money. Knowing where your hard-earned money is going is half the battle. Everyone has their unique way to deal with cash, but figure out what your style is and be consistent! I am a big fan of having a budget and YNAB has been my favorite method to use for several years. Mint is also a great option for tracking your money.

2 – Make it easy and automate your money. Have a reserve fund for life things that just come up! Acorns is an option I have heard great things about to invest your spare change or set up an auto-pay from your paycheck that immediately goes to a Reserve Savings Account that you only touch for emergencies.

3 – Have a retirement plan of some sort, any sort. If your company has a retirement plan, consider yourself super duper lucky and enroll and max out their matches for free money! If you are self-employed, set up an IRA or another investment fund. Betterment and Wealthfront are some options. I have used Betterment for a long time, but find one that works well for your needs.

Here are some tips regarding money that have improved our family’s financial relationship.

A – Be transparent. Tell your partner about the fancy expensive shoes you want, or whatever it is you like to spend $ on and figure out a way to make it happen together. One thought is to establish a threshold (like $50, $100, or more) to discuss together those more significant purchases.

B – Have a financial check-in. Each week (usually for 5 minutes or less), we talk about our money goals, what is going on with our cash flow, and anything we need to reevaluate, be transparent with or add to the save list. Find a time and rhythm for whatever works best for your relationship and put it on the calendar like a work meeting. When you are living on your own, a money check-in meeting with yourself is a great idea to do as well.

C – Individual fun money. While we were in college, we started with just $5 each per month to spend or save on whatever we wanted (the amount has varied over the years), but it is one of the best money things hands down we have done for our money relationship ever. If there is something we want individually, we save, and save, and use cash. Do this when you are single too, it is important to pay yourself, even if it only starts with a few dollars.

I would love to hear your method for having money systems. Share in the comments!

A Swiss Alps Holiday

Ah! How is it already November! The holidays are coming fast and furious this year. Holiday crafting is one of those activities that forces me to slow down and make traditions with my kids so even when I have a busy season, I always try to prioritize at least a few fun projects.

We started our holiday making early with these Swiss Alps inspired tree ornaments, edelweiss garlands and gift tags. Our family has always wanted to visit the Swiss Alps and was inspired by this cheese hike. It’s going on our travel list for next year! In the meantime, we DIY’ed these personalized projects with our Cricut Maker as a placeholder and they are perfect for the holidays. Cricut is really a game changer for getting these professional looking decor that you can customize. Read on for details to create your own Swiss Alps themed holiday.

For this project, Cricut’s Scoring Wheel is one of our favorite tools. It’s a lifesaver especially for these ornament houses giving us exact folds. These charming houses would work well as gift boxes and place-settings. Just add a layer of vellum paper to the interior of the cut-out wall to complete the box.

You can cut a small “+” on the back of the houses for holiday lights to be inserted – great as a garland on your mantle or strung on your tree. So many options!

When assembling the houses, be sure to leave the “eaves” on the left side of the roof unglued toward the ridge of the roof so that the flap on the opposite side of the roof can tuck into it. The bottom of the house comes together in the same fashion as a gift box, allowing you to easily access the underside of the roof for gluing, so assemble that last. To hang them, knot a piece of twine and thread the top of the loop through the hole (the pointed weeding tool helps with this) leaving the knot concealed on the inside of the house. The houses wouldn’t be complete without trees and mountains to add to the Swiss Alps scenery. For these trees and mountains ornaments, knot a loop of twine, then wrap and glue the large folded piece around the knotted end. Layer the smaller folded piece over the top and secure with glue. Play around with the scale of the smaller folded piece to give some variety. For full instructions to make the ornaments in Design Space, click here.

These gift tags are inspired by the edelweiss flower, the national flower of Switzerland. We love the idea of the cut-outs and adding a second layer to the tags for contrast. We are making extras to have on hand for all our gifts this year. It’s so special being able to personalize these and coordinate the colors with our wrapping. Can’t wait to see these under the tree! Personalize your own with our design here found in Design Space.

For an additional handmade touch, we sewed together this edelweiss design inspired garland. You can also add holes to each corner and string together if you don’t have a sewing machine handy. It’s the perfect piece to complete this Swiss Alps scene. Find the garland design and all instructions here in Design Space.

You can find all of Oh Happy Day’s designs in Cricut Design Space as easy to make Make It Now projects, along with a multitude of other design projects. We can’t wait to create more crafts with our Cricut this holiday season.

2 – Aran came out with a beautiful new cookbook, absolutely stunning.

3 – Beautiful colored linen napkins, yes, please.

4 – The simplicity of these marigolds is gorgeous. This arrangement is also beautiful.
